Curious, I took the book from the shelf and saw that it was A Great Occasiona celebratory publication by the Samatha Trust, marking the 25th anniversary of their national meditation centre, Greenestreete. Recently while browsing my bookshelf I noticed a plain green spine with no writing on it. Curious, I took the book from the shelf and saw that it was A Great Occasion [1] – a celebratory publication by the Samatha Trust [2], marking the 25th anniversary of their national meditation centre, Greenestreete. As I thumbed through the pages I recalled my own visits to that tranquil place. A Modern Sutta On Wrong View (Author Unknown)

In what four aspects is there misapprehension through wrong view concerning the four noble truths?
The cause of suffering is money
The cause of suffering is lack of scientific research
The cause of suffering is lack of medical resources
The cause of suffering is one’s parents
The cause of suffering is this government
The cause of suffering is all governments
The cause of suffering is society
The cause of suffering is some person or people.

In what aspects is there misapprehension through wrong view concerning subtle matter?
That the heart is in the brain
That the male and the female element are the same
That the male and female element ought to be the same
That ageing destroys worth, so that all persons over the age of 20 are contemptible… all persons over the age of 30… 40 etc
That youth cannot possess worth, so all persons under 20 are contemptible… all persons under 30… 40 etc
That ageing destroys worth, so that as I grow older I cannot help becoming contemptible.

In what aspects is there misapprehension through wrong view concerning the world?
That the world began with a big bang
That everything is determined and could not be otherwise
That everything happens fortuitously
That there is such a thing as chance
That the world consists exclusively of matter
That the world is continually improving
That the world is continually deteriorating
That the past and the future exist now
That death is an accident that can and should be avoided.

In what aspects is there misapprehension through wrong view concerning knowledge?
That morality (sila) is merely a social custom
That indulgence in sense pleasure is a duty
That there is no advantage of practicing sila towards non-human beings
That only unskilfulness is interesting
That the keeping of sila is boring
That craving is a good thing and should be encouraged.

In what aspects is there misapprehension through wrong view concerning concentration (samadhi)?
That the purpose of samadhi is to reduce stress
That the purpose of samadhi is to improve one’s physical health
That the purpose of samadhi is to keep up with fashion.

In what aspects is there wrong view concerning the teaching (dhamma)?
That religious practice is a quest which is valuable so long as it fails to discover anything
That all religions are the same
That there is something called Budhism and that this is a good thing
That there is something called Buddhism and that this is a bad thing
That this Buddhism is scientific and therefore true
That this Buddhism is unscientific and therefore untrue
That what I do is Buddhism
That I am a Buddhist.
